What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a form of integrative medicine, combining both conventional and natural or alternative treatment styles to give individuals personalized medicine. In naturopathy, the medicine is aimed to stimulate the vis, or body’s own ability to heal itself. Licensed naturopathic doctors must go through accredited naturopathic medical school to practice, which includes several years of studying science courses including anatomy, physiology, genetics, and pathology before learning botanical medicine, physical medicine, and other modalities.

What kind of modalities are out there?

There are many modalities that full under the umbrella of naturopathic medicine. Acupuncture, a form of traditional Chinese medicine, for example is considered a modality or treatment type that naturopathic physicians use. Homeopathy, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, minor surgery including hormone pellet procedures, intravenous (IV) therapy, physical medicine, supplements or nutraceutical medicine, and pharmaceutical medicine are other treatment modalities.

what is traditional chinese medicine?

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a form of medicine dating back to around 300-100 BC backed today by science demonstrating its efficacy in treatment and prevention. It’s based on principles such as Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, the Vital Substances, and the Transformation of Qi. Modalities of TCM practitioners include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Tui Na (Massage). TCM focuses on bringing the body back into balance and harmony such as by strengthening that which is deficient and clearing that which is excess, for example.

how quickly should i expect to feel results?

Because everyone’s body is different, and everyone responds differently to treatment, it is difficult to say exactly when a person will feel better. Some individuals feel better after one acupuncture treatment, for others, it may take weeks of dietary changes to feel improvement. Everyone’s recommended treatment and their response may be unique.
